Why does it say "readback correct", when I didn't read it back correctly?

Readbacks can be challenging due to the current limitations of voice recognition technology. Unlike other ATC programs that allow users to bypass readback errors with a "Read it back for me" button, SayIntentions.AI is the only ATC provider that actively attempts to process pilot readbacks accurately through voice recognition.

Here’s an example to illustrate the complexity:

  • ATC: "Departure on 122.1"

  • Pilot: "Departure on 122.1, 22 Charlie"

  • What ATC hears: "Departure on 122.122, Charlie"

  • ATC responds: "Readback INCORRECT"

In the past, we have experimented with fully enabled strict readback enforcement, and found that it created a frustrating and negative experience across the board. We want our pilots to be able to speak quickly and naturally, without having to worry about slowing down to carefully annunciate numbers and letters. Modern AI tech and speech recognition is simply not advanced enough to reconcile this problem at a level that feels "natural".

It's important to note that we DO still have readback enforcement baked in -- it's just turned way down. If you make an egregious error (such as claiming that you are on final for the wrong runway), ATC will issue a correction. But in general, MOST enforcement in the system is off by default.

If you want readback enforcement in spite of the technical limitations:

You are free to turn on strict readback enforcement.  Note that you must speak clearly and slowly for this to work properly, and it will likely not work well in anything other than English, or for people with poor quality microphones, or non-english accents. Your mileage may vary.

To enable this feature, go to settings, then Experimental, and check the box labeled "Strict Readback Enforcement". (You do not need to restart the app, or your flight).

We will continue to re-visit this as the technology improves and evolves.  For now, we feel like we've found a good middle ground that works for everyone. Those who want this, and understand the trade-offs, are free to turn it on. However, even without this turned on, we still provide an incredibly immersive experience for home flight simulation.
